Five Star Swing - 4/8 piece
"A MUST FOR JIVE & LINDY HOP CLUBS
Five saxophones and a rhythm section swinging like crazy, that’s the aptly named Five Star Swing. As a saxophone section in any band, they could take some beating. First and foremost they are beautifully balanced and secondly they are well drilled by their
leader CHRIS SMITH JNR who has the singular talent of playing the trumpet or flugel with his right hand and the piano with his left, at one and the same time! He also happens to be a very experienced arranger, having
learnt his trade with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Add to that the fact he can also handle a vocal as can his wife, lead alto SIMONE SMITH, and tenorman STEPHEN DAVIES, whose clarinet playing on 'Sing Sing Sing' was superb, and it wiil give you some idea of the breadth of talent in this eight piece line up. Although the programme consisted mostly of swing numbers there was jazz and bebop and some Chris Smith originals, 'Going Dutch' and 'C and A Train' written for NYJO, p
roving just what a talented writer he is. This is a band crying out to be danced to and at the Bull it wasn't long before a couple of jivers took to the floor. An eight-piece band that can perform like Five Star Swing could well become a 'must' for. every jive and lindy hop club in the country."
